HOSPITALEでは、2019年度のレジデンス・プログラムとして、ロンドンを拠点に活動するアーティスト・デュオ「ピル＆ガリア・コレクティヴ」による滞在制作の成果発表として展覧会「（不）可視のプロパガンダ」を開催します。
ピル＆ガリア・コレクティヴは、20世紀モダニズム芸術と現代の資本主義社会の諸問題のつながりに関心を持ち、パフォーマンス、ヴィデオ、コラージュ、インスタレーションとして作品化してきました。美術史上のモダニズムの美学を流用しながら、現代社会に潜む資本主義の隠れたプロパガンダを可視化する彼らの作品は、テクノロジーや価値観の加速度的な発展・変化を経験している現代社会において、未来の社会を左右するさまざまな動きに対して解釈を提示します。ピル＆ガリア・コレクティヴにとって、モダニズムのスタイルや思想を流用する方法論は、過去に対する郷愁や、かつての理想に立ち戻る反動的な態度とも異なり、現代社会の問題を見極め、新たな未来像を創り出す挑戦的かつ創造的な行為です。
本展覧会では、ピル＆ガリア・コレクティヴの約15年間のキャリアにおける一貫したテーマとDIY精神を基調とした表現方法を、ヴィデオとパフォーマンスの記録映像により紹介します。また、1950年代の実験工房や1970年の大阪万博に関するリサーチを行い、日本の文脈におけるモダニズムと後期資本主義の問題を提示する新作のパフォーマンスとヴィデオを制作、発表します。当時の病院建築のひとつの理想の体現としての旧横田医院の空間が、アーティストの手によって現代に蘇り、未来へのひとつの指針となることを願っています。

本展のために新たに制作するパフォーマンスを、旧横田医院の内部空間を背景にライヴ上演します。日本の能楽の構造を参考にし、さらに1950年代のアート集団、実験工房の舞台作品からインスピレーションを得た本作は、日本のモダニズムにおけるある瞬間を亡霊として蘇らせます。

HOSPITALE Project is pleased to host the London-based artist duo Pil and Galia Kollectiv as artists-in-residence in 2019, and present their exhibition ‘(In)visible Propaganda’.
Pil and Galia Kollectiv have been interested in associations between 20th-century Modernism and various issues in contemporary capitalist society, and visualise them in their works of performance, video, installation, and collage. They try to make hidden propaganda in contemporary society visible by appropriating the aesthetics of Modernist propaganda of the past. They view contemporary society, which is experiencing accelerating developments in technology and rapid changes in values, through the lens of modern history, and suggest their own interpretations of various movements that impact on the future of our society. Their appropriation of Modernist styles and ideas, however, should strictly be distinguished from nostalgia for the historicised past or a reactionary attitude simply going back to old-fashioned ideas. Instead, it should be understood as a creative and challenging way of understanding issues in the contemporary world and of creating new images of the future.
By showing a selection of videos and documentations of performance pieces from their career so far, the exhibition presents the artists’ continuous interest in the theme explained above, and the unique style of production that comes from their DIY spirit. Also for this occasion, Pil and Galia develop their interest in the history of Modernism in Japan by conducting research on theatrical works by Jikken Kobo (Experimental Workshop) from the 1950s and Osaka Expo in 1970. Their research will result in a new performance piece and a video, which suggest a relationship between Modernism and Late Capitalism in a Japanese context. Former Yokota Clinic, which represents an ideal example of hospital architecture of the time, will be revived by Pil and Galia to offer a backdrop to the work that also functions as a guide into the future.

Live Performance ‘Souvenir From The Ghost Pailion’
produced by Pil and Galia Kollectiv, and performed by Shiori Shinoda

A live performance, produced for this exhibition, will be held using the space of the Former Yokota Clinic as its background. Inspired by Noh theatre and theatrical works by Jikken Kobo of the 1950s, this work revives a moment in Japanese Modernism as a ghost and her memory.
