私たちの時代の不安定さと脆さをいかに理解し、表現することができるのでしょうか。クリストフィデスは、災害の後の平穏なはずの時代につきまとう、社会的、環境的な「余震」に目を向け続けなければならないという切迫感から活動してきました。地球の時間と人間の時間が織り成す場所の痕跡、その共時性と矛盾が、芸術的なプロセスの方向性を示しています。人間の活動によって傷ついた場所と長期にわたり関わることで、彼女は生態系と生命世界の暴力と不安定さを、人間と人間を越えた回復力の兆候と対比させながら表現しようと試みています。こうした試みは、インスタレーション、16mmフィルムによるエッセイ、探求的な映画的朗読、サウンド作品として作品化されています。
今回のトークでは、クリストフィデスが過去15年間の芸術活動について、また2018年に開始した日本での進行中のプロジェクトについてお話しします。トークの後半では、この数年間に撮影してきた16ミリフィルムと、リサーチを元に制作されたエッセイ的なテキストから、ヨーロッパ中の映画館で開催された一連のフィルム・レクチャー・パフォーマンスの抜粋を紹介します。

How can one grasp and express the instability and fragility of our times? Marianna Christofides’ artistic practice is informed by an urgency to remain attentive to the long-lasting social and environmental ‘aftershocks’ that follow calamitous events and haunt times of supposed calm. Inscriptions of Earth time and human time in the fabric of places, their synchronicities and contradictions steer the artistic process. In years-long engagement with places scarred by human activity, she attempts to negotiate violence and precarity of ecosystems and lifeworlds vis-à-vis signs of human and more-than-human resilience. This materializes in installations, 16mm essay films, exploratory cinematic readings and sound pieces.

In her talk, Marianna Christofides will give an insight into her artistic practice the last fifteen years, before going on to introduce her ongoing project in Japan that she began in 2018. Guided by encounters with artists, activists, scientists, scholars and their lifework, she looked into embodied ecologies of knowledge that remind us of the material reality of depleted environments and propose ways of in-habiting crippled worlds otherwise. From the collected 16mm footage that she has been filming in these years and the essayistic texts that emerged from the research, a series of film lecture performances held in cinemas throughout Europe have materialized so far. During her presentation at Hospitale, Christofides will share excerpts from the material.
